ASK    (a.k.a The On-Ramp)

  • Good morning!
  • What are some things you have learned in school? (wait for some answers)
  • Those are a lot of things that you’ve learned! Do you think you know some of those things so well that you could teach someone else the same thing that you’ve learned?
  • You know – this reminds me of one of my favorite jokes when I was your age.
  • Whenever I’d pass a grade, I’d tell my mom that I could stop going to school, now, because I could get a job teaching the grade I had just finished.
  • My mom would always laugh at my joke. She was very polite in that way - to laugh at the same joke every year.
  • But what I know now – and others in the congregation also know – is that I needed to learn at least a few more things before I was ready to teach a classroom of students for a full year.

TELL    (a.k.a. The Freeway)

  • I was wondering what you’ve learned so well in school that you might consider teaching it to others because that’s what we see happen in today’s scripture story.
  • In today’s story, we hear Jesus tell his disciples to go and do with others what he has done with them.
  • He tells his disciples to go out and find their own students and to teach them the same things that Jesus had taught to them, the disciples.
  • In other words, the disciples are being told that they have learned so well that they are now ready to teach like Jesus did.
  • And that is a pretty amazing thing, really, what Jesus is telling his disciples.
  • He’s telling them that they are able to teach others the very same things that Jesus had taught!

SHARE the Good News   (a.k.a. The Destination)

  • Sometimes, we think that what Jesus did was unique and that no one else could do the things that Jesus did.
  • But today’s story reminds us that Jesus did NOT think this way about himself.
  • Jesus taught his disciples to know and then do the same things that he knew and did.
  • Today’s story reminds us that we can learn things about God from Jesus – much like we learn about things in school.
  • And, the more we learn about God from Jesus, the better able we’ll be to teach and share what we’ve learned about God with others – just like the disciples were told to do!
  • This is the good news for today: That we can learn about God from Jesus, just like the disciples did, and then teach those same things to others – just like Jesus did. Let's pray.

CLOSING Prayer

  • This is a repeat-after-me prayer.

Dear God,
Dear God,

Thank you for Jesus…

Thank you for Jesus…

…who taught the disciples…

…who taught the disciples…

…and us…

 …and us…

…how to better know you…

…how to better know you…

…and then teach others about you.

…and then teach others about you.

  Thank you and Amen
